For the past five years, the city of Zürich has organized week-long festivals in inspirational cities around the world.

This year’s Festival of Two Cities took place in Seoul, bringing together political leaders, artists, musicians, researchers, tech innovators, and – as you may not have expected – the specialty coffee community.

Many local specialty coffee communities meet regularly at events all over the world, from major international tradeshows to domestic coffee festivals. And so, a chance meeting at a recent event between members of SCA Switzerland and SCA Korea led to the Zürich Meets Seoul Coffee Festival, organized by the Zürich University of Applied Sciences’ Coffee Excellence Center and SCA Korea.

Featuring lectures on coffee science and culture alongside barista challenges with Korean Coffee Championship champions, attendees also had the opportunity to exchange coffees from both cities and expand their professional networks.

Ever since we introduced the SCA Global Coffee Events Calendar earlier this year, we’re learning more and more about how members of coffee communities are coming together to build valuable, engaging experiences on a local level. Like the Zürich Meets Seoul Coffee Festival, all of these locally oriented events are built around a shared passion for specialty coffee and a desire to engage meaningfully with others.

Russian Barista Camp

Organized by SCA Russia and the Friday Center in Kaliningrad, Russia’s first barista camp brought 30 people from 15 cities together to attend SCA courses, share their experiences, and explore the local community.

Polish Roasters Summit

Warsaw’s Urban Coffee Marathon combined both a conference and a roasting competition into a two-day summit for roasters in November.

Barista Open 2019

Barista Open recently held its third event – featuring three different competitions – in the middle of the oldest espresso factory in Portugal: an individual competition in the style of the World Barista Championship, a coffee shop competition, and a tag team challenge for barista doubles.
